Artist Statement

The philosophical draw that I experience from the eastern aesthetic is summed up in these two quotes.

“While the western mind carefully sifts, weights, selects, classifies, isolates; the Chinese picture is of the moment and encompasses everything, because all the ingredients make up the observed moment.”

“Calligraphy reflects an artist’s emotions, moral integrity, character, education and approach to life. The way the characters are written is a portrait of the person who writes them.”

This new body of scrolls is particularly inspiring to me,

because, the technique of using the beeswax surface, frees me from having to have the sumi ink pieces made into

formal scrolls or framed behind glass.
